About the Conference

This conference is for teachers, coaches, school leaders, and anyone committed to building a strong foundation for lifelong learning in early childhood education. Whether you're new to Project Based Learning (PBL) or seeking to deepen your practice, you’ll leave equipped with tools and knowledge to expand opportunities for young children in your community.

Building on last year’s success, we’ve expanded our conference sessions to support participants at all stages of their PBL journey. New attendees can explore introductory sessions, while returning participants will find advanced workshops and opportunities to refine their PBL approaches through deeper discussions, hands-on experiences and personalized coaching.

All attendees will have the opportunity to visit classrooms at the University of Montana Learning and Belonging (LAB) School. Following the visit, there will be a debrief and panel discussion with members of the LAB School community, offering further insight into their practices and approaches.

Conference Location:

The event will be held in Missoula, Montana at the University of Montana Phyllis J. Washington College of Education.  The College of Education is home to the Learning and Belonging (LAB) School and the Institute for Early Childhood Education, places that encourage curiosity and belonging—values central to both the institution and the conference.

Schedule Overview:

Each day begins with time to connect with fellow attendees and the schedule blends structured learning with informal networking opportunities. In addition to breakout sessions led by the authors of Implementing Project-Based Learning in Early Childhood, there will be time set aside for sharing ideas with fellow educators.

After Day One, join other attendees for an optional screening of Reflecting on Anti-Bias Education in Action: The Early Years. Interested in exploring Missoula? Head downtown for the city’s monthly First Friday, take a self-guided ArtWalk, or hike the MTrail. All of these optional activities offer a chance to enjoy the local culture and the opportunity to connect and unwind with colleagues.

We’re excited to partner with educators from the University of Montana and the LAB School, who are at the forefront of innovative early childhood education.

  • Exploring Learning Environments and PBL at the LAB School

Conference attendees will have the unique opportunity to visit the LAB School (Learning and Belonging) classrooms, rotating through three distinct early childhood learning spaces. Each space will highlight a different aspect of creating thoughtful, engaging environments that foster deep learning and exploration in early childhood PBL. During the visits, we will focus on the following key areas:

    Environment as the 3rd Teacher
Discover how intentional classroom design and layout can promote autonomy, curiosity, and collaborative learning among young children.

    Projects in Process
Observe ongoing projects and see how the physical environment supports children’s inquiry, critical thinking, and sustained engagement during a PBL unit.

Materials and Resources that Inspire Inquiry or Playful Learning by Design

Explore how the thoughtful integration of play into the learning environment fosters not only intentional skill development but also a sense of joy, wonder, and meaningful engagement in young children.

Pedagogical Documentation: View how the LAB School makes learning visible through pedagogical documentation as a tool for continuous learning and improvement for educators and students. Classroom displays shift the focus from static outcomes to the dynamic learning process, helping to promote deeper, more meaningful engagement.

The session will conclude with a panel discussion and debrief, featuring teachers, children, and families from the LAB School, offering their unique perspectives on the learning environments and the powerful connections between space, learning, and community.
