Project Overview
As children return to in-person learning, there are still many COVID restrictions on visitors to campuses. This presents an authentic, challenging problem. How might children share their new classrooms with their families? How can care-givers see the environment, the recent work and materials, and create a strong home/school connection?
In this project, children choose the areas of the classroom they are most excited about sharing with their families. They create a classroom map, a presentation script, and make a video or take photos of the different areas of the room they wish to share, highlighting the purposes of those areas or materials. The video is shared with families at Back-to-School Night.
While usual PBL units last several weeks, this “Pop-Up Project” is only one week. It includes most of the key elements of a PBL unit, just in a condensed amount of time. This provides a nice introduction to PBL for your students, and the simplicity of the project is easy to manage for teachers. At the same time, the unit empowers our youngest learners to have ownership, agency and independence in their learning as they begin the new year.
Day 1: Launch
Today you will launch the project, share the driving question and introduce the public product.
Day 2: Brainstorming Ideas
Children generate a list of important spaces and materials in the classroom (or school) that they hope to share in their video or slide show.
Day 3: Classroom Map
Children work together to complete a “puzzle map” of the classroom using photographs of the areas they selected for the video tour and choose what areas/materials they wish to share in the video.
Day 4: Script Writing and Rehearsal
Children write simple scripts using sentence stems and rehearse their lines in small groups.
Day 5: Recording the Video
In groups, children record their parts (one child can be videographer). If recording is not possible, have children take photographs and help them to write captions or make labels.
Day 6: Reflection, Feedback and Revision
Children watch the initial draft of their video or slide show and reflect upon and revise their work after receiving feedback.
Day 7: Project Reflection and Back To School Night!
Children watch their video/slide show and share observations. Then they present their video at Back to School Night!
